Abstract
Spectmomycin hydrochloride, a new salt of spectinomycin, was used in the treatment of acute gonorrheal urethritis in both men and women. Forty-seven males and four females confirmed as acute gonorrheal urethritis by gram-stained smear or culture were treated with a single injection of spectinomvcin hydrochloride. Treatment falied in only one male case.
The cure rates in this series were very satisfactory. The drug was easily handled, its only disadvantage being its bulk in the dose specified for females. It was extraordinarily painless, much more so than penicillin.
It is considered that a single injection of spectinomycin 2 gm for males and 4 gm for females, offers a suitable alternative to penicillin in the treatment of acute gonorrheal urethritis.
